Dave Mathews - Boxee
There have been many software applications to control the playback of your media, you know, movies, music files, and photos - but none can compare to Boxee.
Boxee is a new visual and social interface for media - both on your hard drive, local area network and the Internet. It is connected and social so you can discover and share links to content with your friends! We call this a 10-foot interface, because it is designed to run on your High Definition Television, with you relaxing across the room, on the couch. That means you do not use your mouse for boxee, BUT a remote control that may have come with your computer, don't worry if you do not have one, since your keyboard can be used too.
The top row of the boxee interface shows what your friends have recommended for YOU to watch. The content can be files on their computer, or free streams from the Internet. If there is a match between their downloaded content and an internet stream, boxee will automatically make the connection for you, so you can click and play instantly.
As your friends consume media, the feed shows up on the second line of the interface. Their activities all automagically appear with the artwork and more information about the content. This is a neat way to see what your friends are into, and for you to share with them what you are doing. If you want to shout your love of media from the mountain top, boxee can be setup to automatically update your twitter, tumblr and friend feed accounts. This way your friends who aren't using boxee yet can keep up with your taste (or lack thereof) of media.
The third line in the boxee interface is the content that has been found most recently on your computer or local area network. Boxee loves network shares, so you can put your media on a network drive in another room, or hook up a USB drive directly. In the background, boxee will grab the artwork, synopsis of the media and build a visual database of your files, all automatically for movies, television shows and music. Boxee plays any non-DRM media, and is compatible with 30 different codecs, including high definition.
If you do not have a lot of ripped content, or want to discover new streaming content, check out the Internet channels within the audio and video sections of boxee. You can stream media from CNN, YouTube, the BBC and even photo sites like Flickr and Picasa. Any RSS or XML feed can be plugged into boxee as well, so you can add new channels yourself, or discover ones that we add to the interface.
Boxee is an open source software program, so anyone can develop new applications as well as channels within the interface. This means it is extendable with plug-ins much like Firefox.
As you can see, boxee is the first of its kind social media center. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did creating it!
